Summary
Steps 8 and 9 helped us restore trust and develop healthier relationships. We have learned to keep our side of the street clean rather than focus on what’s wrong with others. We realized that we needed to change because it was the right thing to do. We shifted our center of emotional gravity back into ourselves and urged ourselves to do better for the sake of our own integrity. When we changed for the right reason, we saw that it was intrinsically rewarding. We started to validate ourselves.
By making amends to those people we have harmed, we recovered our integrity. We resolved unfinished business and freed up a lot of psychic energy trapped in unfinished business. We no longer had to endure a raging civil war in our guts. Our self-esteem improved, and we demonstrated that we were becoming trustworthy.
Step 10 helped us maintain our emotional maturity and integrate what we have learned about ourselves and healthy human relations in Steps 1–9. We have experienced a personal transformation. We are well on our way to reconstructing ourselves.
We have embarked on a major transformation of ourselves and our attitudes. The path has been treacherous and challenging, but persistent and honest effort, along with a good guide and a power greater than ourselves, has helped us discover a new understanding of ourselves and a path to healthier human connections. We have started to incorporate a design for daily living in our lives that keeps us emotionally balanced, in harmony with our true-self and with others.
There are many hidden benefits, or rewards, from our efforts to adhere to right principles and healthier living. In the second part of this book, I will help you see some of the changes that you can expect from making amends and consistently practicing self-examination and self-regulation.
